Revolutionizing Public Works

Public works is at a revolutionary moment. We know the issues—economic downturn, aging infrastructure, environmental challenges and climate change, evolving population and workforce demographics. Many of our world’s countries are in “critical condition” as we rush head-long into continuous social, economic, and cultural change.

At the Forefront!
And yet…public works professionals from around the world are stepping forward to meet these challenges with inspiration and innovation:
• Thinking and planning strategically
• Implementing sustainable principles and practices
• Deploying cutting-edge technologies
• Serving with old-fashioned dedication and heart

Uniting!
Now is the time for public works professionals from around the world to unite in collegiality and common purpose. Join us on August 15–18 in Boston, MA—home of the original American Revolution—for a revolutionary event, the 2010 American Public Works Association International Public Works Congress & Exposition! Explore and discover, dialogue and strategize, agree and disagree, examine and evaluate, and just plain have fun learning and sharing practices, technologies and strategies for creating a better future for the world and future generations.

You’ll be joining forces with your colleagues from both the public works and solid waste professions as the APWA Congress is co-locating and uniting with the Solid Waste Association of North America’s premier event—WASTECON! This will be an unprecedented opportunity for the public works and solid waste professional to together focus on today’s imperative issues: reducing waste through recycling and other alternatives, managing and lessening your community’s carbon footprint, and exploring management and leadership challenges and practices. You’ll have more education sessions to choose from; a bigger exposition floor to explore; more colleagues to network with; and even more great ideas that you can take back to your community!

Igniting the Fire!
Joining in the global public works revolution is not an option you can ignore—it is already well underway. The 2010 APWA Best Show in Public Works is your opportunity to ignite the fire for yourself and your community, to gain insight and inspiration from the keynote and special workshop presentations, to advance your knowledge and expertise about best practices, technologies and the latest thinking, and put yourself and public works on the leading edge of this new revolution!

Boston, a City Rich in History

APWA takes its annual Congress to the historic Commonwealth of Massachusetts: Boston. There is no other U.S. city with the historical significance of Boston—from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the Boston Tea Party to the midnight ride of Paul Revere, Boston has played a key role in American history.

But it’s not just about the history of Boston; equally impressive is the modern day significance of Boston as the city has become an intellectual, technological and political center. Home of the Central Artery Tunnel Project (The Big Dig)—the most expensive public works project in the U.S., and the first underground rapid transit system—Boston is sometimes referred to as the Hub of the Universe, making it the perfect destination for the Best Show in Public Works.
