SPECIAL EVENTS

Red Rocks Park Volunteer Opportunity

Friday, September 16, 2011, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Join the APWA Proud to Care community outreach effort, to protect and enhance Colorado’s crown jewel, Red Rocks Park. This magnificent geological feature, an open-air amphitheater that is not duplicated anywhere in the world, is the backdrop for an extensive trail system that leads through spectacular rock formations, valleys and a natural meadow. This busy trail system is in need of repair and we are asking for your help. All tools will be supplied along with gloves, extra water and other creature comforts. You will be working above 6,000 feet on what we hope will be a lovely, sunny fall day. Please come prepared with a hat and sunscreen.

Your work will be appreciated by thousands of visitors to the Park who come to use the trails for exercise and to learn about Colorado’s geology, flora and fauna. You will experience this exceptional Park not just as a visitor but as a valued contributor to our City’s volunteer conservation efforts. To view the park and to learn more about its history, visit www.redrocksonline.com.

Roundtrip transportation from the Colorado Convention Center to the work site will be provided. Limited space is available on a first-come, first-registered basis. Download the registration form here.

APWA Blood Drive

Tuesday, September 20, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

Do you have 45 minutes to spare to save the life of another person? Did you know that every three seconds someone needs blood? One single donation can save as many as three lives—and there is NO substitute for human blood. Anyone age 17 years or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good general health may donate. Photo identification is required before beginning the donation process. (Some health conditions or medications may temporarily or permanently prevent persons from donating blood.) Prospective donors must first complete a health history questionnaire and go through a screening process. During the screening process, a technician will take important vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, and an iron check. If all the requirements are met, a unit of blood is drawn from the donor. The actual blood collection takes approximately 15–20 minutes. The entire process, from when you sign in to the time you leave, takes between 45–60 minutes. Please join APWA—proud partners with the Children’s Hospital of Denver—in this vital effort. Roll up your sleeve and save a life!
