A Greener APWA Congress
As primary caretakers for infrastructure, public works departments all over North America are finding new ways to ensure a better tomorrow.
Following the lead of its members, APWA is stepping up its efforts to make the Best Show in Public Works more sustainable every year. In the last several years we have implemented the following efforts:
- Electronic registration
- Printing on FSC-certified paper made with post-consumer content and renewable energy
- Printing small Congress Previews and Congress Programs
- Education sessions focused on green and sustainability issues
- Electronic speaker files
- Exercising a green procurement strategy to purchase registration bags, badges and lanyards. Turn them back in to us onsite, and we’ll recycle them!
- Encouraging Convention Center and official hotels to implement waste reduction, energy and water conservation, and clean air practices
- Educating exhibitors with tips and best practices on how to “exhibit green”
In May 2010, the Colorado Convention Center received LEED Existing Building: Operation and Maintenance certification, the largest building in Colorado and one of the largest convention centers in the country to have achieved this certification. Their robust commitment to sustainability also includes a 300-kilowatt solar power system and a full-time Sustainable Program Manager. The Colorado Convention Center is committed to the core values of: Mindfulness, Integrity, Transparency, and Accountability with focused sustainable efforts in the areas of Energy Reduction and Alternatives Sources, Waste Reduction and Diversion, Water Consumption and Quality, Air Quality and Alternative Transportation and Community.
There are many more ways to make Congress more sustainable every year; we'll be exploring all that are feasible. Before you travel, take a few minutes to figure out your own personal carbon footprint. There are a number of websites that have calculators to assist you with this process. Working together we can all make a difference!
